“I had been waiting for months to have some free time to write new songs, songs that would take me to the road again, concert venues and radio. In February, the virus arrived and then the lockdown.
I love my place so the idea of being locked in didn’t bother me theoretically, on the contrary, I would finally have time at home, I would finally not be lost in meetings and lunches. Free time. Songs. Nothing else. Except that no notes, no words, no lines came during these two months, nothing. Time yes, but songs none.
I decided to take out my special grey ink. The one I made myself by mixing different tones in the wonderful shop InkStand in Tokyo. I also pulled out my brush and my fountain pen, bought in the same shop last year and my perfect notebook, tailored especially for me after selecting the paper, the cover, the binding and the clasp in a shop in the same area of Tokyo.
Instead of tidying the different chaotic areas of my apartment (cupboards, shelves, kitchen, pharmacy…) I started drawing them. I was ecstatic to be able to spend time on all the different shapes and their wonderful unorganized harmony. When I finished drawing cups, toys, medications, music instruments and other kitchenware my eagle eye landed on the clothes dryer posing majestically under the sun on the terrace. T-shirts, tea towels, my daughter’s pyjamas but mostly, all the way up was hanging a mask.
I told myself I had found the IMAGE of the lockdown.“
Albin de la Simone, is a French pianist, composer and performer. He follows his own path with his unique elegant and delicate style.
Since his first album, Albin de la Simone, released in 2003, Albin de la Simone has worked his way with elegance in the very busy French music panorama. In the same line as Alain Souchon, with skills and subtlety, he sculpts pop songs, which, as a sweet and light perfume, stay with us. Talented and inventive, he whispers a sensitive and singular song to our ear with mischievous charm and seductive humor where you can feel melancholy mixed with irony.
He has released 5 albums (“Albin de la Simone” 2003, “Je vais changer” 2005, “Bungalow!” 2008, “Un homme” 2013 and “L’un de nous” 2017), being nominated to the Victoires de la Musique in 2018 in the Best Song Album category and in 2014 in the Best Live Newcomers category.
He has been working as a musician, producer, arranger, songwriter and performer for other artists including Vanessa Paradis, Alain Souchon, Alexandre Tharaud, Miossec, Alain Chamfort, Keren Ann, Brigitte, Pierre Lapointe, Arthur H, Mathieu Boogaerts, JP Nataf, Iggy Pop, Salif Keita among others.
He has lately directed the albums of Carla Bruni and Pomme (Best French Album at the Victoires de la Musique in 2019)
